There is a question that sits underneath every decision you make, every relationship you form, every risk you take or avoid. You have never articulated it. But you are living your answer to it every single day.
The question: What makes this worth doing?
Viktor Frankl, who survived Auschwitz and went on to build logotherapy, argued that meaning is not something you find. It is something you construct. And the construction happens whether you are paying attention or not.
The Unconscious Architecture
Your brain builds a meaning framework automatically. Through experience, reward, punishment, and observation, your neural networks develop a hierarchy of what matters. This hierarchy drives your behavior more reliably than any conscious intention.
The problem is that most people’s meaning frameworks were built by accident — assembled from parental expectations, cultural defaults, and whatever happened to be rewarded in adolescence. These frameworks feel like identity. They are actually architecture.
You are not living according to your values. You are living according to your brain’s best guess about what will keep you safe and accepted. Those are not the same thing.
The Gap
Frankl observed that the people who survived the camps were not the strongest or the healthiest. They were the ones who had a reason to survive — a meaning that was stronger than the suffering. This was not optimism. It was a cognitive anchor that gave their brains something to organize around.
The same principle operates in ordinary life, at lower stakes but with the same mechanism. People without a conscious meaning framework are not directionless — they are directed by default settings. And default settings are optimized for survival, not for living.
The Invitation
You do not need to find your purpose. You need to examine the purpose you are already serving — unconsciously, automatically, by default — and decide if it is actually yours.
This is not a self-help exercise. It is the most important cognitive audit you will ever do. Because the answer to “What makes this worth doing?” is the answer to everything else.
Frankl was right. The question is whether you are willing to ask it.
