The Label That Feels Like an Answer
Picture a woman sitting across from her therapist in a quiet office somewhere in Chicago or Portland or Atlanta — doesn't matter which city, the scene is the same everywhere now. She's been talking for forty minutes. She describes the way he'd go cold without warning, the way his voice would change, the way he'd say things that left marks she couldn't show anyone. She arrives, finally, at the word she's been building toward. *Abuser.* She says it with the particular exhale of someone who has been holding their breath for a long time. The therapist nods. The session continues.
The label feels like the end of a long search. It organizes the chaos. It assigns the weight to the right person. It tells her — and everyone she tells afterward — who was wrong and who was wronged. In a culture that has spent the last decade developing an increasingly sophisticated vocabulary for relationship harm, the word lands with the satisfying click of a key in a lock.
But what if the label, while emotionally true in the sense that harm was real and felt, is cognitively incomplete? What if the map it hands her — clean, moral, final — is actually a distorted map? And what if navigating by a distorted map produces a distorted exit, a distorted healing path, and a distorted understanding of what would actually need to change for either person to be different?
This is not a defense of harmful behavior. It is a precision argument. And precision, in this particular cultural moment, is in short supply.
A Billion Views and a Clinical Blind Spot
The vocabulary of relationship harm has gone genuinely mass-market. According to reporting by *The Atlantic*, content tagged with 'narcissistic abuse' had accumulated over one billion TikTok views by 2022, with the platform's algorithm reliably amplifying content that assigns fixed character pathology to relationship partners — a framing that mental health professionals have publicly warned oversimplifies complex relational dynamics. *The New Yorker* has documented a parallel shift in clinical settings: therapists report that clients increasingly arrive with pre-formed diagnostic labels for their partners rather than descriptions of specific behaviors, which complicates the actual work of treatment.
The words themselves — *gaslighting, trauma bonding, narcissist, abuser* — migrated from clinical manuals into group chats, Reddit threads, and podcast episode titles with remarkable speed. There is something genuinely valuable in that migration. People who previously had no language for what was happening to them found language. Recognition is not nothing. Naming harm is not nothing.
But there is a cost embedded in the way the naming is happening, and it's worth examining carefully.
The behavioral pattern at work here — what psychologists sometimes call blame architecture — is the tendency to externalize the entire explanatory burden onto another person's character. When we say *he is an abuser*, we are making a statement about what kind of person he fundamentally is, not about what was happening inside his nervous system during the moments that caused harm. The label is a character verdict. It feels complete because it closes the question. There is nothing left to understand — only something left to escape.
The problem is that the American Psychiatric Association's own diagnostic framework, the DSM-5, does not include 'abuser' as a clinical category. The behaviors that get grouped under that label — rage, control, emotional withdrawal, verbal aggression — map onto a range of diagnosable conditions including PTSD, complex PTSD, borderline personality disorder, and intermittent explosive disorder. Every one of those conditions has an established neurobiological substrate. Every one has evidence-based treatment pathways. The character verdict forecloses all of that. It says: there is nothing to treat, because there is nothing to understand. There is only someone to leave, condemn, or warn others about.
Sometimes leaving is exactly right. But leaving with a distorted map is still leaving with a distorted map.
What the Brain Is Actually Doing
Here is what neuroscience can now describe with considerable precision.
The autonomic nervous system — the ancient, largely unconscious infrastructure that regulates our physiological state — does not operate on a single setting. According to polyvagal theory, developed by neuroscientist Stephen Porges, it shifts between distinct states depending on its assessment of threat: a ventral vagal state of social engagement, a sympathetic fight-or-flight mobilization, and a dorsal vagal shutdown that resembles collapse or dissociation. These are not metaphors. They are measurable physiological shifts that change what the brain can and cannot do.
In the fight-or-flight state, the prefrontal cortex — the region responsible for empathy, impulse control, and the kind of rational communication that relationships require — is functionally suppressed by subcortical stress circuitry. The brain is not making a moral choice to stop caring about the other person. It is executing an ancient survival protocol that was never designed for intimate relationships. Controlling behavior, verbal aggression, emotional withdrawal: these can emerge not from a character disposition but from a physiological state the person may have no conscious access to.
Dan Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, describes this process in terms that are almost impossible to forget once you've heard them. When the subcortical limbic system fires faster than the prefrontal cortex can modulate it — a process Siegel calls 'flipping the lid' — the person is no longer operating from their most integrated, intentional self. They are operating from a system that evolved to survive, not to communicate. This is a neurological event. It is not, in the first instance, a moral choice.
The psychologist John Gottman's research at the University of Washington makes the physiological reality even more concrete. In distressed couples, when heart rate exceeds roughly 100 beats per minute during conflict, the behaviors that follow — stonewalling, contempt, verbal aggression — are physiologically identical to what happens in a drowning response. Gottman called this state 'diffuse physiological arousal,' and found it to be the single strongest predictor of relationship dissolution. From the outside, stonewalling looks like deliberate cruelty. From the inside, the nervous system is overwhelmed beyond its coping capacity. The person is not choosing to wound. They are, in a very literal physiological sense, going under.
A drowning person can still pull someone under with them. The mechanism doesn't change the danger. But it changes — profoundly — the understanding.
Where the Nervous System Learned This
The nervous system that overwhelms a partner in adulthood was often shaped by a nervous system that was overwhelmed in childhood. This is not a soft claim. It is one of the better-supported findings in contemporary neuroscience.
Research by neuroscientist Martin Teicher and colleagues at Harvard Medical School found that childhood maltreatment — including emotional abuse and neglect, not only physical harm — produces measurable structural changes in the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. The result is a nervous system chronically biased toward threat detection and reactive aggression: an amygdala that fires faster, a prefrontal cortex that is chronically under-resourced for the regulation work that intimacy demands. The adult who 'loses it' in a relationship argument may be operating from a brain that was architecturally shaped by years of having no safe harbor to return to.
A 2021 meta-analysis published in *Psychological Bulletin*, examining 228 studies and more than 100,000 participants, found that intimate partner violence perpetration is significantly associated with insecure attachment styles — particularly anxious and fearful-avoidant attachment — which are themselves rooted in early relational trauma and nervous system dysregulation, not stable antisocial personality traits. The person doing harm is, more often than the character-verdict framework acknowledges, a person whose earliest experiences of closeness were also experiences of danger.
This is not exculpation. Understanding the origin of a behavior is categorically different from excusing it. A person can be fully responsible for the harm they cause and also be a person whose nervous system was shaped by harm they did not choose. Both things are true simultaneously. The moral label collapses that complexity into a single verdict. The neuroscience restores it.
The Cognitive Trap Hidden Inside the Label
There is a reason the label feels so certain and so satisfying even when it is incomplete. The brain, when it experiences pain, does not simply register the pain and wait for further information. It constructs a narrative — rapidly, automatically, and largely without our awareness — that assigns cause, intent, and meaning to what happened. This is the mind's most fundamental operation: not perception, but interpretation. The story of *he is an abuser* does not arise from a careful forensic analysis of his neurobiology. It arises because the brain experienced something terrible and needed, urgently, to know why.
This post-hoc narrative construction is a feature of cognition, not a flaw. It is how we function. The problem arrives when we mistake the narrative for the mechanism — when we treat the story the brain generated to explain the pain as an accurate map of what was actually happening.
And then confirmation bias takes over. Peter Wason's 1960 selection task experiments demonstrated that the tendency to seek information confirming existing beliefs and discount contradicting evidence is a near-universal feature of human reasoning. Once the label 'abuser' is adopted, it functions as a cognitive filter that reorganizes all subsequent perception. Neutral behavior becomes evidence of manipulation. Positive behavior becomes evidence of a 'cycle.' The label becomes self-sealing. It cannot be disconfirmed because every new data point is processed through the lens it created.
Drawing on the clinical framework developed by neuroscientist Andrei Kurpatov, the Contradiction Principle asks us to locate the hidden gap between the story we tell about our pain and the actual mechanism producing it — in this case, the gap between *he is an abuser* and *his nervous system was overwhelmed*. These are not the same statement. They do not produce the same understanding. And they do not produce the same path forward. The Contradiction Principle is not a therapeutic exercise in forgiveness. It is a precision instrument for finding where the map diverges from the territory — because that divergence is precisely where our thinking goes wrong.
Kurpatov's framework suggests that the most emotionally satisfying explanation for our experience is frequently the one most worth interrogating. Satisfaction, in the domain of understanding, is often a sign that the brain has stopped looking.
Why the Distinction Produces Different Outcomes
If this were only a philosophical argument about the nature of moral labels, it would matter less. But it has measurable consequences.
Batterer intervention programs — the standard court-mandated response to domestic violence in the United States — are built on the premise that intimate partner violence is a moral and character problem requiring accountability, education, and consequence. Research published in the *Journal of Family Psychology* found that these programs show recidivism reduction rates of only approximately 5% on average. Five percent. After decades of implementation, after countless mandated sessions, after the full weight of the legal system applied as moral pressure: five percent.
If the behavior is rooted in nervous system dysregulation — in an amygdala chronically biased toward threat, in a prefrontal cortex that flips offline under stress, in attachment patterns forged by early relational trauma — then the intervention that might actually work is regulation training, not moral condemnation. Treating a neurobiological problem as a character problem produces, apparently, near-zero behavioral change. The map was wrong, and the wrong map produced the wrong intervention.
This section requires the same care the whole piece requires: it is not arguing that the person harmed should stay, should forgive, should do the work of regulating their partner's nervous system. That is not the argument. The argument is that understanding the mechanism produces better outcomes for everyone, including — especially — the person who is leaving. You leave differently when you understand what you're leaving. You grieve differently. You are less likely to find the same nervous system wearing a different face, because you understand what you were responding to. You heal differently when the story you carry is accurate rather than satisfying.
The Map Is Not the Territory
None of this is an argument for rehabilitating harmful people or softening accountability. A person who causes harm is responsible for the harm they cause. Full stop. The nervous system explanation does not relocate that responsibility. It contextualizes it — which is a different operation entirely.
What neuroscience offers is not a defense. It is a more accurate map. And accurate maps matter because we navigate by them. The person who leaves a relationship understanding that her partner's nervous system was chronically dysregulated by early trauma — that his controlling behavior was a drowning response, not a predatory strategy — is not leaving with less information. She is leaving with more. She is leaving with an understanding that may protect her from the next relationship, from the particular confusion of loving someone whose nervous system learned that closeness means danger.
The word 'abuser' will not disappear from the culture, nor should it disappear entirely from our vocabulary. There are people who cause harm deliberately, calculatingly, without the physiological overwhelm that polyvagal theory describes. The clinical categories exist for a reason. But the word has traveled so far from its clinical origins, been applied so broadly and so rapidly, processed through so many algorithmic amplification loops, that it now functions less as a precise description and more as a cognitive shortcut — one that closes inquiry at exactly the moment inquiry would be most useful.
The question worth sitting with is not whether the label is emotionally true. Often it is. The question is whether it is causally complete. Whether the map it provides is accurate enough to navigate by. Whether the certainty it produces is the certainty of genuine understanding or the certainty of a brain that has stopped looking because it found a story that fits.
Because here is what is genuinely unsettling: the most satisfying explanations for our pain are often the ones that protect us from the complexity we most need to see. The label feels like arrival. The neuroscience suggests it might be, in the most uncomfortable sense, a departure point.
The brain was drowning. That doesn't mean you had to drown with it. But knowing the difference — between malice and overwhelm, between character and mechanism, between a verdict and an understanding — might be the most important cognitive distinction you make about the relationship you're trying to leave behind.
